OpenAI says **ChatGPT now handles roughly one-fifth of Google's search-like query volume**, and that weekly users grew from 1 billion to 1.2 billion in about two months, according to a [Big Technology transcript](https://www.bigtechnology.com/p/openai-chatgpt-search-is-about-20) published November 3. Days later, [Search Engine Roundtable reported](https://www.seroundtable.com/chatgpt-tools-for-business-42476.html) that OpenAI is close to launching a Business Hub that shows verified companies how often ChatGPT mentions them and how many clicks it sends. AI search got bigger and started to become measurable from the platform side.

In Europe, **an adviser to the EU's top court said Gemini answers can infringe press publishers' rights** when they reuse recognizable wording or get past paywalls, [RTÉ reported](https://www.rte.ie/news/europe/2026/1103/1597874-eu-court-backs-publishers-google/). In the U.S., The New York Times sued Brave on November 2. And **Meta's AI-generated Facebook Answers pages passed 6 million indexed URLs in Google**, a public test of the scaled content abuse policy.

Google kept turning AI Mode into a place to transact, adding **home services booking links, direct checkout in Canada and up to four ads in a single answer**. Search Console users also saw a click spike that looks like automated activity, so check your November numbers before you report them.

## A week when AI search got counted

For two years the debate about AI search has run on third-party estimates. This week the platforms started supplying their own numbers. OpenAI put a size on ChatGPT search, and it is building a dashboard to show businesses their share of it. Google, for its part, pointed to query growth at a five-year high and kept adding ways to book, buy and click ads without leaving AI Mode.

The legal picture moved too. A senior EU court adviser drew the clearest line yet between training a model on news content, which he called permitted, and reproducing that content in answers, which he said can infringe. That distinction will matter for every publisher deciding what to let AI systems read.

If you read [last week's roundup](/seo-geo-ai-visibility-weekly-roundup-oct26-30), this is the other side of the same coin. Last week was about controls for site owners. This week is about scale, measurement and who gets paid.

## OpenAI says ChatGPT is a fifth of Google

OpenAI's consumer product lead for ChatGPT, Adam Fry, told Alex Kantrowitz at an OpenAI dinner in New York on Monday, November 2, that ChatGPT's search volume has reached about 20% of Google's. [Big Technology published the transcript](https://www.bigtechnology.com/p/openai-chatgpt-search-is-about-20) on November 3.

> "ChatGPT's volume of search-like queries is now roughly one-fifth the volume of queries of Google."

Fry also said ChatGPT went from 1 billion to 1.2 billion weekly active users in about 60 days, and the same report puts voice use at 250 million weekly users. Asked what counts as a search, Fry told the room that "every time you ask a question and go search the web, that's a search," as [Search Engine Roundtable recorded](https://www.seroundtable.com/chatgpt-20-percent-google-42451.html). Kantrowitz added that Bing holds about 5% of search share, which would make ChatGPT's search volume larger than Bing's if OpenAI's figure holds.

The claim lands the same week Alphabet is still talking up its own numbers. Its [Q3 2026 earnings release](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1652044/000165204426000080/googexhibit991q32026.htm) says year-over-year Search query growth is "the highest it has been in the last five years," with Search and other revenue up 12%. Both statements can be true at once: total search behavior is growing, and more of it is happening outside Google.

- **OpenAI has not shown its math.** [Search Engine Journal pointed out](https://www.searchenginejournal.com/googles-search-volume-is-about-5x-chatgpts-openai-says/595817/) that Fry did not say which Google figure he compared against, which time period, or which regions.
- **The definition is generous.** Any prompt that triggers a web lookup counts, including questions people would never have typed into Google.
- **Volume is not traffic.** Neither figure shows whether ChatGPT searches replace Google searches or how many clicks either one sends to websites.

**Why it matters.** Even if the real ratio is lower, the direction is clear, and the categories Fry named are the ones that matter to most of our clients: people, places, products, finance and health. Those are the queries where being cited inside the answer now competes with ranking on page one. Budget conversations that treat ChatGPT as a rounding error need updating.

## ChatGPT is building its own Search Console

The second OpenAI story may matter more for day-to-day work. [Search Engine Roundtable reported on November 6](https://www.seroundtable.com/chatgpt-tools-for-business-42476.html) that OpenAI is preparing a tool under the banner "Claim your business in ChatGPT." Marketplace analyst Juozas Kaziukėnas spotted it and described what it does:

- Tracks how often a business is mentioned in ChatGPT responses each day.
- Counts clicks from those responses to the business website.
- Lets the business add products and keep its information current.
- Lets a business agent answer customer questions with context the company controls.

It is part of a larger Business Hub, available only to businesses that verify ownership, for example by connecting a Shopify store. It does not show prompts, user data or competitor rankings, so it will tell you that mentions changed but not why. The report says it is separate from ChatGPT Ads.

**Why it matters.** This is the first sign of first-party AI visibility data from a major assistant. Impressions and clicks from the platform itself will be more accurate than any outside panel. They will also be limited, and the gap between "we were mentioned" and "here is the prompt that mentioned us" is where the analysis still has to happen. Teams that already track a fixed prompt set will be able to read the new numbers in context on day one.

## An EU court adviser draws a line on AI answers

On November 3, Advocate General Maciej Szpunar gave his opinion to the Court of Justice of the European Union in a case brought by Hungarian publisher Like Company against Google over Gemini. [RTÉ reported](https://www.rte.ie/news/europe/2026/1103/1597874-eu-court-backs-publishers-google/) that he sided with the publisher on the central question.

> "When an LLM (large language model)-driven chatbot retrieves publication from a press publisher's website, reuses that publication to generate an answer, and provides that answer to the user, the press publisher's right may be infringed in certain circumstances."

Szpunar said those circumstances include getting around paywalls or other technical barriers, and reusing "the form of expression of that publication in a recognisable manner." Facts on their own are not protected. He also said that using copyrighted material to train models is "freely permitted under the text and data mining exception." The opinion is not binding, but RTÉ notes the court follows most of its advisers' opinions and will rule in the coming months. Google said it acknowledged the opinion's recognition that EU law permits AI training on publicly available information.

The same week, The New York Times filed suit against Brave. [Search Engine Journal summarized](https://www.searchenginejournal.com/ny-times-accuses-brave-of-scraping-and-exploiting-content/595679/) the [complaint](https://nytco-assets.nytimes.com/2026/11/new-york-times-brave-complaint-11-2-26.pdf), which alleges Brave scraped Times content, including paywalled articles, sold access through its Search API to AI companies, and ignored cease-and-desist letters from August 2025 and April 2026. These are allegations, and Brave had not responded in the coverage.

**Why it matters.** The legal fight is moving away from training and toward retrieval, the part that powers live answers. If the court follows Szpunar, AI answers in Europe that echo a publisher's wording could carry licensing costs. For brands that publish, original phrasing, data and analysis gain value. For everyone else, expect AI systems to paraphrase more and quote less.

## Meta's 6 million AI pages test Google's spam rules

[Search Engine Roundtable reported on November 5](https://www.seroundtable.com/facebook-answers-google-42467.html) that Google has indexed more than 6 million Facebook Answers pages. These live under facebook.com/fb-answers/, began appearing around mid-2026, and consist of an AI-written summary of a topic built from public Facebook posts by people and pages. They rank in the classic results, in AI Overviews and in AI Mode, and the directory now ranks for millions of queries.

SEOs who have studied the pages describe them as a textbook case of what Google calls scaled content abuse: large numbers of pages generated mainly to rank. Google has not commented publicly. Our [explainer on Google's spam updates](/google-spam-updates-explained) covers how that policy has been enforced against smaller sites.

A related enforcement change surfaced the same week. Google emailed sites that once had site reputation abuse manual actions to say those actions [no longer affect results shown to users in the European Economic Area](https://www.seroundtable.com/google-email-site-reputation-policy-eea-42462.html). The change took effect on August 30, 2026, and notices went out on November 4.

**Why it matters.** Spam policy only shapes behavior if it applies to everyone. If Meta's pages keep ranking, other large platforms will copy the play, and smaller publishers will compete with AI summaries of their own topics on domains with enormous authority. Watch whether these URLs drop out over the next few weeks. That will tell you more about Google's enforcement than any policy page.

## AI Mode keeps moving toward the transaction

Google spent the week adding ways to finish a task inside AI Mode.

| Date | Change | Status |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Nov 4 | Up to four ads per answer | Spotted |
| Nov 4 | Home services booking links | Live in U.S. |
| Nov 4 | UCP direct checkout | Live in Canada |
| Nov 6 | Personal Intelligence opt-in prompts | Spotted |

[Search Engine Journal reported](https://www.searchenginejournal.com/google-ai-mode-home-services-booking-quote-links/595871/) that Google VP Robby Stein announced booking and quote links in AI Mode through Angi, Thumbtack, Housecall Pro and Jobber, with ServiceTitan coming soon. Partner terms differ: Jobber and Housecall Pro say there is no lead fee, while Angi's announcement does not say whether its fees apply.

In Canada, [Google announced](https://blog.google/intl/en-ca/products/explore-get-answers/a-new-way-to-shop-introducing-a-more-intuitive-agentic-shopping-experience-for-consumers-and-retailers-in-canada/) checkout in AI Mode and the Gemini app through the Universal Commerce Protocol, with lululemon, Shoppers Drug Mart, Simons and select Shopify merchants at launch. [Search Engine Journal noted](https://www.searchenginejournal.com/google-brings-ucp-direct-checkout-to-ai-mode-in-canada/595882/) that retailers remain the seller of record and that a simpler Merchant Center integration is due next year.

On ads, [Search Engine Roundtable spotted](https://www.seroundtable.com/google-ai-mode-four-ads-42443.html) four ads in a single AI Mode response, where one or two has been typical. Google is also showing a pop-up urging users to [turn on Personal Intelligence](https://www.seroundtable.com/google-personal-intelligence-popup-42468.html) and connect more Google apps, and a ["continue with this search?"](https://www.seroundtable.com/google-ai-mode-continue-with-this-search-42475.html) prompt that may be aimed at bots.

Ad volume data from Adthena, [reported by Search Engine Journal](https://www.searchenginejournal.com/google-ai-answer-ads-apparel-electronics-report/595984/), counted roughly 175,100 paid placements in Google AI answers across five U.S. retail categories from June to September, about 111,000 of them in apparel. Adthena sells ad tracking for Google and ChatGPT, so it has a stake in the idea that these placements need monitoring.

- **Placements are not performance.** Adthena counted ads, not clicks, spend or conversions.
- **The query set is not public.** The report does not say which queries it tracked or whether they stayed the same over time.
- **The data stops in September.** It misses the run-up to Black Friday.

There is also a sobering number on the other side. A working paper by researchers at Vienna University of Economics and Business and Frankfurt School of Finance & Management, [covered by Search Engine Journal](https://www.searchenginejournal.com/google-search-chatgpt-ad-revenue-per-visit/595596/), found U.S. revenue per visit of $0.89 for ChatGPT ad clicks against $2.45 for Google paid search across 102 advertiser sites. The data came from Grips Intelligence, where one author is an advisor, and it is last-click only.

**Why it matters.** For local service businesses, AI Mode is starting to route bookings through partner platforms, so your profile on Angi or Jobber may matter as much as your own site. For retailers, checkout without a site visit means product data quality decides the sale. And for advertisers, AI surfaces are filling with ads before anyone has clean performance benchmarks.

## Brand AI Overviews move into the knowledge panel slot

On desktop, Google has moved AI Overviews for many brand searches to the right-hand column, where the knowledge panel used to sit. [Search Engine Roundtable showed examples](https://www.seroundtable.com/google-ai-overviews-brands-right-42440.html) on November 2, including a search for Apple, after several SEOs spotted the change in late October.

**Why it matters.** For a branded search, the first description of your company a searcher reads may now be written by Google's model rather than pulled from your structured data and Wikipedia entry. Search your own brand name today and read what it says. If it is wrong or out of date, the fix sits in the sources the model draws on: your About page, your Business Profile, and third-party coverage.

## Search Console data needs a second look this week

Several sites saw clicks jump two to six times between October 31 and November 2 while impressions and positions stayed flat, [Search Engine Roundtable reported](https://www.seroundtable.com/google-performance-reports-spike-clicks-42448.html). [Analysis published by Search Engine Journal](https://www.searchenginejournal.com/november-click-spikes-in-google-search-console-are-bot-traffic-how-to-filter-your-reports/595834) found the extra clicks clustered on pages ranking in positions 12 to 54, with click-through rates no human audience would produce. Google has not confirmed a cause. Filter the dates out of any November report.

On AI reporting, Gary Illyes said Google does not "have anything to announce yet" on more AI click data, [Search Engine Journal reported](https://www.searchenginejournal.com/google-ai-click-reporting-uk-deadline/595663/), ahead of a December 3 deadline for Google to comply with the UK CMA's publisher conduct requirement.

Three smaller changes are useful. Google [rewrote its "Crawled, currently not indexed" help text](https://www.seroundtable.com/google-updates-crawled-currently-not-indexed-42450.html) to say the status is common and does not necessarily need action. Search Console added [multi-select device filters](https://www.seroundtable.com/google-performance-report-multi-select-device-filters-42457.html). And Illyes explained that Google can [temporarily protect an important URL](https://www.seroundtable.com/google-protected-important-urls-index-42464.html) from deindexing when it starts returning a 4xx error.

> "The side effect is that since we don't know what's on the page anymore, we have nothing left to show: no snippet, no favicon, no nothing."

**Why it matters.** Search Console is still the main source of truth for organic performance, and this week showed both its limits and its quirks. A bot spike can make a flat month look like a breakthrough, and AI Mode and AI Overview clicks are still not broken out on their own.

## Also this week

- Reddit shares fell after CEO Steve Huffman said Google search referrals went "down meaningfully" because of AI Mode and AI Overviews, as [Search Engine Roundtable covered](https://www.seroundtable.com/reddit-stock-drops-declining-google-search-traffic-42432.html) on November 2. We looked at what this means in [our Reddit earnings analysis](/reddit-earnings-ai-search-traffic).
- Google said Search, Gemini and Gemini in Classroom will be [off by default for K-12 student accounts](https://blog.google/products-and-platforms/products/education/ai-learning-era-updates-2026/) until administrators turn them on, and is adding Guided Learning to Search for students.
- BrightEdge data [reported by Search Engine Roundtable](https://www.seroundtable.com/google-shopping-eu-dma-42456.html) found Google Shopping appears 16 to 35 times as often as the next comparison service in the new EU box across Spain, Italy, France and Germany. BrightEdge sells SEO software, and the analysis covers only four markets.
- Bing is testing an [AI visual summary](https://www.seroundtable.com/bing-search-ai-visual-summary-42455.html) button that turns a result into an AI-generated infographic.
- ChatGPT Ads will [replace Max Bid and Max CPC with target CPA and target CPC](https://www.seroundtable.com/openai-updates-chatgpt-ads-bidding-options-42470.html) for new campaigns from November 9.
- Google Ads added California, South Korea and Vietnam to the regions that require [AI content disclosure](https://www.seroundtable.com/google-ads-expands-ai-content-label-disclosure-42461.html) in ads.

## What we would do first

- **Set a ChatGPT visibility baseline now.** Pick 20 to 30 prompts your buyers ask, record which brands ChatGPT names and cites, and repeat monthly. When OpenAI's Business Hub arrives, you will have context for its numbers.
- **Prepare to claim your business.** If you sell through Shopify or another platform OpenAI may use for verification, make sure ownership, product data and business details are current.
- **Read your brand's AI Overview.** Search your brand name on desktop, check what the right-hand panel says, and correct the sources behind anything wrong.
- **Clean your November Search Console data.** Exclude October 31 to November 2 from trend reports if clicks spiked without impressions, and note the anomaly for stakeholders.
- **Check your partner profiles if you sell services.** If you work through Angi, Thumbtack, Housecall Pro or Jobber, confirm your listing is complete and understand the fee terms before AI Mode sends leads through it.
- **Protect distinctive wording.** Publishers and brands with original research should keep paywall and crawler controls deliberate, since the EU opinion ties infringement to reused expression and bypassed barriers.

The numbers this week came from the platforms themselves, and each one served the company that published it. That is a reason to keep your own measurement, not to ignore theirs. The brands that know where they stand before the dashboards arrive will be the ones who can tell whether the dashboards are right.

FAQ

## Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about GEO, SEO, and AI-driven search visibility.

### Is ChatGPT search volume 20% of Google's?

OpenAI's consumer product lead Adam Fry said on November 2, 2026 that ChatGPT's volume of search-like queries is roughly one-fifth of Google's, according to a Big Technology transcript. Search Engine Journal noted OpenAI did not say which Google figure, time period or regions it used. Treat it as OpenAI's own estimate, not an independent measurement.

### How many weekly users does ChatGPT have in November 2026?

OpenAI says ChatGPT grew from 1 billion to 1.2 billion weekly active users in about two months, according to Big Technology's November 3, 2026 report on remarks by Adam Fry. The same report says voice features reached 250 million weekly users.

### Is OpenAI building a Search Console for ChatGPT?

It appears so. Search Engine Roundtable reported on November 6, 2026 that OpenAI is testing a Business Hub feature that lets verified businesses track how often they are mentioned in ChatGPT responses and how many clicks go to their site. It does not show prompts, user data or competitor rankings.

### Can AI chatbots like Gemini infringe publishers' copyright in the EU?

EU Advocate General Maciej Szpunar said on November 3, 2026 that a chatbot answer can infringe press publishers' rights when it reuses a publication's form of expression in a recognizable way or gets content by circumventing paywalls, RTÉ reported. He said training on such material is permitted under the text and data mining exception. The opinion is not binding, and the Court of Justice will rule in the coming months.

### What is Facebook Answers and why are SEOs calling it scaled content abuse?

Facebook Answers are AI-generated topic pages under facebook.com/fb-answers/ built from public Facebook posts. Search Engine Roundtable reported on November 5, 2026 that Google has indexed more than 6 million of them and they rank in classic results, AI Overviews and AI Mode. SEOs argue this fits Google's scaled content abuse policy, though Google has not commented publicly.

### Why did Google Search Console show a spike in clicks in early November 2026?

Several sites saw clicks jump between October 31 and November 2, 2026 while impressions and rankings stayed flat, according to Search Engine Roundtable and Search Engine Journal. The pattern points to automated activity rather than people, and Google has not confirmed a cause. Filter the spike out of reports rather than changing any pages.
